The Freshest Fish and Chips in Sydney
A Family Day at Sydney Fish Market.
On the weekend, my husband surprised me with an adventure to the
Sydney Fish Market and I just had to sing its praises to you.

For that fish and chips fix...
If you've always lived in Sydney, the Fish Market won't be anything new to you but when was the last time you visited, and have you ever taken your kids there? I hadn't been there for years, as it's a trip across town and I'm slightly scared of the crowds. However, if it's not Good Friday or Christmas Eve, and you arrive there mid-morning, rather than right on lunchtime, you'll find it a family-friendly and kid-friendly experience.

We arrived around 11am for brunch with our five-year-old, and we found on-site parking easily. The next thing was to marvel at how much the Market has grown over the years and what a
foodie hub it's become. There's a vast range of options:- hasty tasty eating in the
food court,
fresh seafood,
take-away meals,
yum cha or
fine dining.
I'd recommend you hold on tight to the hands of your little people, as the Market is a bustling tourist-attraction, and take a wander around to view ALL the options first, before you decide
where and
what to eat.

There's the most glorious range of
sushi you'll ever see (outside of Japan!) and traditional
hot fish and chips, as well as street-food delights, such as single-serve
scallops in mornay sauce,
chilli king prawn kebabs, and
fried salt and pepper squid.
You can be as adventurous, or conservative as you like with your seafood, and enjoy a progressive meal, sampling a tasty delight here and there. There's also a
fresh bread and pastry vendor (you must try the
olive and fetta baguette!), a
continental deli and coffee shop, and
fruit market, so you can pick up the ingredients for a full meal and cook them up at home.

A visit to the Market can be as budget-conscious or expensive as you like. We went food court-style and managed to nab some seats at communal tables (just remember, you need to use the tables provided by the vendor you purchase from, or book space in advance to avoid eating on your feet). For a large serving of chips and a selection of fried seafood (tapas-style), it cost us just under $30, plus $10 for a large tuna and cucumber sushi box for my son. Another $5 for a large bottle of soft drink to share, and we came away with full bellies for $45.

You could also spend a lot more and go for yum cha at one of the restaurants, or buy up a load of exotic, fresh seafood to take home, but that's completely up to you.
Whatever you do, a visit to
Sydney Fish Market is a cultural and gourmet EXPERIENCE. It's something every family should try at least once, and hopefully on a more regular basis.
