So, picture this: it's the late 1700s, and a bunch of British folks arrive in Australia, looking to make sense of a land that's about as familiar to them as a kangaroo in a tuxedo. They whip out their maps and start drawing lines, like they're playing a giant game of connect-the-dots, claiming Crown land and private property like it was a quirky treasure hunt. Our old mate Governor Arthur Phillip was the first to go rogue, sketching a circle in the sand around his crew at Manly Cove in January 1788. This cunning move basically translated to the Gayamagal people hanging out nearby: "Hey, folks, you're not welcome here anymore." And just like that, the long saga of dispossession for the First Nations peoples kicked off, booting them off land they'd been caring for longer than most of us can count.

Fast forward to today, and you can get a better understand of this complicated history at the Museum of Sydney. From April 1 to August 31, make your way there and dive into the story of how we went from sandy circles and colonial ambitions to a deeper awareness of the land's First Nations custodians. Come along and explore the layers of culture and history that often get overlooked in the hustle and bustle of modern life. It's an eye-opener and a chance to connect dots that date back 60,000 years.
