If you’re into thrifting, op-shopping or upcycling, or if you just love a bargain, you’ll definitely want to check out the new Savers Thrift Superstore in Sydney.

Savers is an American thrift store with a 70-year history of reusing, repurposing and upcycling. It was founded in 1954 in San Francisco and the chain has now spread across the USA, Canada and Australia.

However, unlike charity shops such as Salvos Stores, Vinnies and Lifeline in Australia, Savers is not a charity. They are a for-profit company whose purpose is to keep items out of landfill by championing reuse.

So, what can you expect to find at Savers?

The first thing you’ll notice is that Savers is a large store. Yet despite its warehouse-style layout and vibe, it is also a surprisingly organised store.

The main section of the store is filled with labelled clothing racks – separated into infants, kids, men's and women's clothes, then also sectioned by style e.g. tops, pants, dresses, coats, jeans etc, making it easy to find items you are looking for.

Alongside the clothes section, you will find a wide selection of men's, women's, children's and infant's shoes.

There is also a large household items section which includes glassware, cookware, vases, candles, office supplies and photo frames to name just a few. Prices start from just a couple of dollars.

As a point of difference, Savers offers bags of smaller items such as stationery and toys. This is not something I’ve seen in other op shops. A bag of a random selection of small soft toys costs just $3.99.

My favourite section of the store has to be the books. There is a wide range of books on offer – general adult fiction, literature, horror, science fiction, mystery and crime, fantasy, romance, picture books, children's chapter books, young adult fiction and non-fiction. Books prices start from $3.99.

Other items you will find include DVDs, VHS videos, video games, puzzles and board games as well as a small selection of records. There is also a small furniture and home décor section.

For those needing to try clothes on there are fitting rooms at the front of the store and there are shopping trolleys for bulky items. If you are purchasing you can choose between a self-service or a serviced checkout.

For those who would like to receive extra perks and discounts, you can sign up for the Super Savers Club Card program which is free to join.

Savers also accept donations of specific items. To find out more information about donating click here.

Savers is located in the south-western Sydney suburb of Hoxton Park. The address and opening hours are listed here.
