Hidden in the middle of Western Sydney, is an oasis called
[Link http://www.blacktown.nsw.gov.au/Discover_Blacktown/Venues_and_Facilities/Open_Space_Parks_and_Reserves/Nurragingy_Reserve/Nurragingy_Map Nurragingy Reserve]. It actually forms part of the Western Sydney Parklands and you will find it in Doonside. The reserve is managed by Blacktown City Council and it is one of their premier recreational facilities.
Several beautiful gardens make up
Nurragingy Reserve, as do playgrounds, walking paths, a lake, function centre and also a kiosk. It's a very popular spot for birthday parties and other gatherings, as the reserve is just so spacious.
Nurragingy Reserve covers 63ha. The reserve is full of natural bushland as well as striking formal gardens, including the stunning Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens. These gardens have an imposing gateway, a 7 arch stone bridge, a pavilion and a gazebo, as well as a cascading waterfall. They were designed in consultation with Blacktown City Council's sister city in China (Liaocheng). You will find many people trying to take the perfect selfie or wedding photo in this picture perfect location, as they try to pretend that they are somewhere far, far away from the middle of Sydney!
Other gardens in the reserve include the Fred Hollows Sensory Garden, a Bush Tucker Garden, a Maori Garden, a Memorial Garden as well as gardens that are specifically used for wedding ceremonies. But as we all know, kids aren't really interested in gardens, so they will no doubt have you searching for the various playgrounds located in
Nurragingy Reserve once you get there!
The reserve has 3 playgrounds, with the most popular being the waster splash play area. It is a favourite amongst Western Sydney residents who want to cool off for free in the warmer months. There are also two other playgrounds located within
Nurragingy Reserve. They are all within walking distance of each other, so kids can burn off some energy running or skipping between them all. You can also drive around the reserve, so make sure you don't let kids wander off by themselves, in case they meet an oncoming vechicle.
There are several picnic shelters and wood fired BBQ facilites in
Nurragingy Reserve and you can book these [Link http://www.blacktown.nsw.gov.au/Discover_Blacktown/Venues_and_Facilities/Open_Space_Parks_and_Reserves/Nurragingy_Reserve/Picnic_Shelters online]. Otherwise there are quite a few areas where you can throw down a picnic rug, or you can grab a bite to eat at the kiosk.
The
Lakeside Kiosk is open every day (except Christmas day). Here you can pick up cool drinks, ice creams and light meals like hot dogs and burgers. They have some under cover seating, but most of it is alfresco where you can look over the lake to the beautiful Chinese Garden.
Nurragingy Reserve is a hidden gem in Western Sydney. Whether you want somewhere to play for a couple of hours, or a space to hang out in for the whole day, this is a place you should consider for you next family outing.
In 2017 a miniature railway is due to open up in Nurragingy Reserve - we shall keep you posted as to when the trains start chugging away!
