School Holiday Movies.

It's that time again! The big studios are rolling out a raft of blockbuster films for kids of all ages, to lure you back to the movies. So, empty your piggy bank, or possibly your whole bank account, depending on which cinema you go to and which snack bar combo you buy.

The local cinema has some great attractions this holiday and coming soon

Movies for Pre-School and Primary Schoolers

The Boss Baby

I just read a comment on Facebook that said, 'I thought this movie would be horrible from the trailer. The movie is much better than the trailer'. My thoughts exactly!

Ever since I first saw the promo for this, I have been swearing I wouldn't see it. However, my four-year-old was transfixed by the idea of a ‘baby boss’, so I gave in and I’m so glad I did. My son enjoyed the movie and I loved it even more than him!

I laughed from start to finish at the in-jokes for parents and the clever, yet admittedly complex storyline. It involves a plot to make puppies more popular than babies. Sound familiar, fur baby fans?

My son's key takeaway from the movie is that babies come from the ‘baby city’ and that he wants a baby. My key takeaway from the movie is that if babies really were delivered ready-made in taxis, I would gladly have another one.

Smurfs - The Lost Village

If The Smurfs I & II (half animated/half live-action films) weren't enough, then your littlies are probably busting to see this new, fully animated version. Remember, like the old days, when we used to watch this cartoon on the TV? It has endless appeal... And you know you're onto a good thing when McDonalds partners up with a movie to make Happy Meal collectibles!

The LEGO Batman Movie

Dare I say it, possibly one for the boys? The LEGO movies have found a niche, so if your youngin’ likes LEGO and superheros, this one is probably a sure bet. No doubt there is humour for the adults but I can't say this is one I would be hanging out to see, myself. Still, I’m not the target market, am I?... And this one is PG, so it probably sits somewhere between primary school and tween.

Movies for the Tweens

Beauty and the Beast

Tale as old as time... and in the grand tradition of remaking Disney classics, this live-action version is taking the world by storm. Beauty and the Beast is sure to be an inter-generational hit, with mums who loved the 90s-animation and their daughters, who love Emma Watson and can't wait to see her as a Disney Princess. I don't think you could go wrong with this one...

Dance Academy: The Movie - 2017

For those of who not in the know, it’s worth noting that this is the film adaptation of an Emmy Award-winning Australian TV series. Following the drama-filled lives of the teenage dancers, after they have graduated from the academy, this is every fan of the show's dream. Dancing movies are always fun - you just have to get your tween on.

And just in case you were wondering, I haven't forgotten about Power Rangers, or The Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 but before I lose your attention I just had to preview the one we've all been waiting for - out in cinemas in June.

Coming Soon

Despicable Me 3

Hearing my little boy talk about Mr Gru and the Minions, I can't help being drawn in by this loveable franchise. The trailer for the latest movie looks amazing! Again, possibly designed more for adults than children, the latest arch-nemesis for Gru is Balthazar Bratt, a moonwalking, mullet and shoulder pad-loving fiend from the 80s. The dance off between Bratt and Gru looks a treat to behold. Just love it when a movie is as good for the adults, as the kids. We'll be first in line to see this one…

What kid’s movie are you most looking forward to seeing?
