The picture perfect Halvorsen Park is located right on Parramatta River amongst a new residential area in Ermington. In keeping with its waterside locale, the playground within the park has a nautical/naval theme and it's a great place to take kids under the age of 10 years for a play and a stroll along the river.
Ermington in a previous life was home to a thriving boat building community and quite a few naval ships were built there including a submarine called the HMAS AE2. The playground has actually been built with this sub as its inspiration. The play gym resembles a submarine, complete with a periscope! You will aslo find some fabulous metal artworks which resemble nautical signals and a large sandstone commemorative plaque that tells the story of the HMAS AE2.
The playground is also the "backyard" for many of the residents who live in the apartment blocks surrounding Halvorsen Park, many of whom work in the defence force.
Other fun play equipment in the playground includes:
Logs and sandstone blocks to walk and climb on
Wooden bridge with ship rope
And they are all on top of soft spony rubber matting to help any little tumbles not hurt so much.
The playground is right next to a lovely green space which is perfect for picnics or a game of backyard cricket. Once a month the
Market By The River is also held on this space.
The only negatives we found in Halvorsen Park were:
The Playground is not fenced and the river is close by - so you need to keep a watchful eye on your kids at all times.
There aren't any toilets and there are none within walking distance that we could find.
The all important caffeine fix will need to be acquired before you arrive as there aren't any cafes close by.
However when the Market By The River is on (the 1st Saturday of each month), there are coffee vans and portaloos available.
