Family Friendly Ideas for St Patrick's Day

Where to take your little leprechauns for St Pat's

While it's not a public holiday, St Patricks' Day is a great day to celebrate community spirit. It's the day we associate with the luck of the Irish, all things green... and a pint of Guinness with friends.

This year, 17th of March falls on a Saturday, so it's a good excuse to get out with the family across the weekend, and join this happy occasion.

Sydney Mums Group has some family-friendly ideas for celebrating...

1) The Green Quarter - Sunday 18th of March

The Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park is hosting the St Patrick's Day Organisation's Family Day Out this year, with children's area and parade activities from 12noon.

At the heart of The Green Quarter, there will be stalls, creating a warm and vibrant space, catering to every taste bud. There will also be a variety of quality craft and merchandise available for sale.

Kids Area will offer entertainment, activities and fun things to do and there will be a children's parade.

Irish Bar will have all your favourite beers on tap.

Live entertainment will include marching bands and Irish dancers.

This is a FREE community funded event, though there will be buckets at the park entrance for donations.

Keep your eye on The Green Quarter website here as further details emerge about the event.

2) The Riverview Hotel - St Patrick's Day Weekend

On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of March, this popular pub in Balmain will serve an Irish food menu, with live Irish music sessions and champion Irish Dancers. Plus, the bar will be serving the best Guinness in Sydney! A good idea to book a table for lunch if you're thinking of taking the kids.

For more info, follow the Riverview's Facebook page.

3) The Mean Fiddler - Saturday 17th of March

The Mean Fiddler in Rouse Hill is synonomous with Irish all year round, so where else would you be on St Patrick's Day? This will be the biggest party in the Hills District lasting well into the night but if you're looking for family-friendly daytime activities, never fear.

Get down to The Fiddler nice and early to secure yourself a table and start your day with a full Irish Breakfast from 8am.

The Guinness and Irish Coffee will be flowing, while the Irish dancers jig away to live Irish Music in the Alfresco Courtyard.

For the Fiddler kiddies, there will be face painting, balloons and fun from 12noon - 5pm.

For more info on the malarkey in store for you, check out The Mean Fiddler website here.

4) The Irish Shop at Stanmore

This one's a little different and it's not an official St Pat's Day event, as such. However, if your family has ties to Ireland, you might enjoy a nostalgic visit to Australia's longest established Irish merchandise store. It's sure to be a big weekend for the shop and you can pick up the perfect Irish-themed t-shirt to wear to the festivities at Moore Park, or Irish snack food for your own family party at home.

The Irish Shop has a wide selection of Irish jewellery, clothing, books, art, food and gifts for all members of the family, including babies.

Check out the full range at the store's website here.
