Deakin University: Our Life at Home Study

Deakin University needs parents to participate in a national study about life in lockdown and how we can come out healthier and more active.

Are you a parent of a school-aged child? How has life, activity, health and wellbeing changed for you and your family recently? How have Australian families adapted and changed? What will the new ‘normal’ be once restrictions are lifted?

Researchers from Deakin University’s Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN) are interested in this and asking Australians to participate in a new national study called Our Life at Home.

The online survey will take parents about 30 minutes to complete and all participants will go into the draw to win a $100 voucher, with 35 to be won.

The survey can be found here.

Performing healthy levels of physical activity, sleep and screen time is important for adults and children’s physical health, social and emotional health and wellbeing as well as children’s academic performance.

However, the change in lifestyle and restrictions due to COVID-19 have made this more challenging than ever before. Remote learning, closure of parks and sporting groups and physical distancing has meant that the usual ways children are active are reduced, and screen time is needed for most areas of life.

The researchers want to know what life at home has been like with these changes. How have parents’ and children’s behaviours, health and wellbeing changed, how have families adapted, what do they need to get back to sport and recreation, and what this will mean for health and behaviours in the long-term.

The researchers are working with key stakeholders in the health, education, sport and recreation sectors which will mean the information collected can directly inform strategies and programs to get families healthier and more active after lock-down and in the long-term.

Participation involves completion of an initial 30-minute online questionnaire, followed by up to four much shorter (10-15-minute) online surveys over two years to investigate long-term changes.

All participants will go into a draw to win a $100 Woolworths voucher. The survey can be completed here.
