Sydney Mums Group is here to kick off the discussion, with recommendations we've gathered around the traps. These are the streets and suburbs that get into the spirit, year in, year out but if you discover new favourites, or notice some of these have slipped, we'd love your comments so we can keep the list fresh and as accurate as possible. The best part about this list is that the displays are shared with the community for FREE.
First place goes to Borgnis St, Davidson NSW 2085.
I did a snap poll on Facebook and people from all over the North Shore voted for this location, instantly. It's a must see, with a sausage sizzle and ice-cream vans!

And as a post script, it may not be lights, but if you are travelling by bus with kids this Christmas season, you might be lucky enough to board the Brookvale Depot Christmas Bus. It's cool!
Not technically the suburbs but for city-dwelling families, or visitors, the glorious interactive Christmas Tree in Martin Place steals the show each year, with carolers performing nightly. And throughout December, Darling Harbour is at its prettiest after dark, with lights for all the family.
For late night shoppers, Pitt Street Mall is offering the wondrous Boulevard of Light a canopy of suspended Christmas trees, featuring nearly 80,000 LEDs! There will also be carolers on Thursday nights and weekends from 6pm to 8pm.
NEW ENTRY: From 6 - 24 December, St Mary's Cathedral is offering a spectacular, FREE light show nightly, with carols from 7.30pm and lights (ala Vivid) from 8.30pm. Don't miss it!
Western Suburbs (including the North-West)
Unless readers can put forward a great case for their suburb, I'm going to crown the Hills District the one to beat, with good form in recent years. Hills Illuminate is a big summer festival and check out all the suburban displays below...
Baulkham Hills NSW 2153: Geraldine Ave, Marcel Place, 149 Baulkham Hills Rd, Brokenwood Place and Solent Circuit (Hillsong).
Castle Hill NSW 2154: Squire Place, Lisa Crescent, 136 Excelsior Ave, Grandoaks Place and Minago Place. (Unfortunately, Castle Hill Christmas Village - 6 Gardenia Place - won't be operating this year).
Kellyville and Kellyville Ridge NSW 2155: Garnet Place, 37 Marsden Ave, Karinya Place, Hector Court, Carmelo Court, 76 Arnold Ave, 37 & 39 Marella Ave and 44 Mawarra Crescent. The Ridge traditionally offers Bruton Ave, 37 Merrillville Rd and Chino Place.
Winston Hills NSW 2153: 40 Caroline Chisholm Drive, Caledonian Ave, 37 Bellotti Ave, corner of Oakes Rd and Edison Pde.
Notable Mentions Chauvel St and Cutler Pde in North Ryde NSW 2113
176 Lilyfield Rd, Lilyfield NSW 2040
Camellia St, Greystanes NSW 2145
Beethoven St, Seven Hills NSW 2147
Auburn Botanic Gardens will host a Christmas in the Gardens event, on Sat 9 Dec 7 Mallee St, Quakers Hill NSW 2763 - traditionally this house has hung over 7,000 lights. Can they top that this year?
Okay, Easties, Avoca Street, Bondi NSW 2026, wins by default. In all my searches for recommendations, this is the street that comes up trumps every time. I really had to search for the runners up. So, what am I missing in this list?
Notable Mentions Randwick City Council NSW 2031: Christmas lights for charity (gold coin donation) are scheduled to be held in Frederick St, Coogee, Dacre St, Malabar and Barwon Crescent, Matraville.
Matraville NSW 2036: Barwon Crescent, Larose St, Gwydir Ave, Knowles St, Flanders Ave, Flanders Ave and Franklin St.
For 14 years, Waratah Street, North Bondi NSW 2026 has been lighting up the neighbourhood. Check it out!
When I heard that it traditionally offers 50,000 lights, a Nativity Scene, a reindeer, a ferris wheel and a singing bear, I had to give top spot to Madrers Ave, Kogarah NSW 2217.
All ages are covered with heaps of FREE and affordable activities that span from action-packed to quiet, indoor and outdoor activities lasting a couple of hours to a whole day and longer running camps.
