Where To Take The Kids for a Museum Fix.

Unless you're a particular fan of history or art, a museum might be the last place you think of taking your kids, especially the under 5s.

While many preservation sites are still best enjoyed by adults, we are lucky in Sydney to have a raft of museums that actively welcome families, and offer exhibitions especially designed for children, even as young as pre-schoolers.

Sydney Crochet Club will host two very special kids crochet classes during the spring holidays that are perfect for children who would love to learn a new hobby.

Recommended for: The grand-daddy of them all, this museum specialises in natural history and it's where you go for DINOSAURS and life-size wild animal displays!

2) Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM), Darling Harbour

Recommended for: This museum celebrates sea-related history with cool exhibitions and real-live naval vessels to explore, including a submarine.

3) Campbelltown Steam and Machinery Museum (CSMM)

Recommended for: Families that love trains will enjoy this massive collection of steam-powered machinery, and opportunity for steam train rides on special event days, one of which is being held this IMD weekend.

4) Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Circular Quay

Recommended for: The more artistically-inclined may get more out of this museum than most, but how do you know if your child enjoys art, unless they are exposed to it? Check out the special exhibitions and activities geared towards kids, throughout the year. Especially cool to visit during the VIVID Festival in May/June!

5) Museum of Magical Arts, Darlinghurst

Recommended for: Sydney's best kept museum secret, invites families to explore a magician's backstage tricks of the trade, including Houdini memorabilia and much more.

6) Powerhouse Museum, Harris St, Ultimo

Recommended for: Those fascinated by science and technology, both modern and historical. Like the CSMM, the Powerhouse has cool steam exhibitions and loads of special events throughout the year, including those celebrating popular culture.

7) Sydney Tramway Museum, Loftus, Sutherland Shire

Recommended for: Whether you're into vehicular heritage or not, all families love a good novelty train or tram ride. This museum celebrates the history of the old tram networks of our city, and you can go for a ride in a restored tram! A piece of yesteryear.

Sydney Living Museums

8) Elizabeth Farm, Rosehill

Recommended for: This attraction is tremendous for introducing your children to the colonial history of Sydney, in a fun, accessible way. This is a museum crossed with a farm/garden, and with plenty of demonstrations and special school holiday workshops, kids will be fascinated by the lives of John and Elizabeth Macarthur and their roles in shaping early Sydney.

9) Hyde Park Barracks Museum, Macquarie Street Sydney

Recommended for: Anyone who wants to learn more about the lives and tribulations of convicts in early Sydney. This is a must for all kids at some stage, as the colonial artefacts and recreations, bring the hardships of convict transportation, incarceration and labour to life.

10) Museum of Sydney, Cnr of Phillip & Bridge Sts, Sydney

Recommended for: Apart from being one of the sites to visit during the VIVID Festival, this museum is a specialist in all things Sydney history. Children are encouraged to get up close and personal with the exhibits, evoking curiosity, rather than boredom, from learning about our city's heritage.

Which one of these is your favourite museum? We'd love to hear from you in the comments. Why is your pick great for kids?
