If you are looking for an affordable, totally fun hands on experience for the whole family, then you need to check out the Sand in the City exhibition at the Museum of Sydney!

Sand in the City MOS

This exhibition is all about celebrating Sydney's beautiful beaches. An incredible looking "sand castle" is sitting on top of a big sand pit where kids (and adults) can dig away all day long. There are moulds for you to fill so that you can create your very own castle, or a mermaid, or a fish.

There are also two smaller digital sandboxes that have colourful images projected on to them as you dig and sculpt your very own underwater creation.

When you grow bored of the sand you can move to the Lego pit where you can create your own amazing work of Lego art. Perched above the Lego pit is an amazing Lego creation by Ryan McNaught the award winning "Brickman." It features iconic images of the Sydney seaside like the Bondi Pavilion.

All around the walls of the exhibition there are information boards about the beach and the creatures that live there. There's also colouring in to complete which can then be displayed on a special section of the wall.

Whilst the kids are happily occupied, the parentals can sit down and watch a documentary film featuring beach goers from all over Sydney who explain why they love the beach so much, and what their favourite things were to do on the beach - ocean swimming, surfing, sand running etc.

Before you leave the Museum, make sure you check out all of the other spaces inside and out, as they are very hands on for kids too. And if you are feeling hungry the Governor's Table Restaurant on the ground floor is offering a special "Kids Eat Free" (with every adult main purchased) promotion whilst the exhibition is on.
