Kids At The House - Sydney Opera House

by Rebecca (follow)
The Sydney Opera House runs a family friendly program called Kids At The House every year to encourage younger audiences to experience the delights and magic of live theatre, music and other stage performances.

Throughout the year they host Babies Proms for little ones aged between 2-5 years. In these relaxed performances little people can dress up and listen to the sounds of beautiful music and watch dancers bring to life performances such as Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. Or on other occasions such as at the end of the year, kiddies can sing along to Christmas carols performed by the Babies Proms Orchestra.

The Proms only run for 35 minutes, the perfect amount of time to keep small minds entertained. During the performances there is open seating on the floor and children are more than welcome to move around and shake their booty! Afterwards they have the opportunity to meet the musicians and check out all of their instruments and who knows they may be even allowed to bang a drum or two.

During the school holidays some local and international artists perform on stage for school aged children, as well as their young siblings. Dirt Girl World and Mister Maker have featured in the 2016 season. Story books such as the 52-Storey Treehouse, Stickman, Pete the Sheep and The Very Hungry Caterpillar are also brought to life on stage.

There are free creative play days in every school holidays which enable children to participate in interactive installations that are manned by professional artists. Held in the western foyer of the house from 10am – 4pm, children just need to bring their imagination (and carer) along.

Ticket prices start at $25.00 depending on the performance and there are discounts available for booking multiple performances. Check the Sydney Opera House website for more details.

If you need to feed your brood before or after the shows, the Sydney Opera House have a special deal with some of the surrounding restaurants. The “Junior Lunch” deals can be found at restaurants such as the Opera Bar and the Opera Kitchen during the school holidays.

The best way to get to the Sydney Opera House is via public transport. You can catch either a bus, train or ferry to Circular Quay then walk over to the Opera House. Paid parking is also available through Wilson Parking underneath the Opera House.

Just to let you know, you cannot take your pram into the performances. You have to store them in the cloakroom. This is a free service, just make sure you arrive in enough time to organise this. There are toilets with baby change facilities available too. And as there will be dozens of other families in attendance, you don’t have to worry about one of your offspring having an unexpected meltdown, as everyone else will completely understand. There’s no stuffiness at the house, when the kids are in the house!
